About

A record, not a brochure.

Untold Lanka is an independent editorial record of Sri Lanka's traditions, folklore, ancient cities and the places known mainly to the people who live beside them. We publish slowly, we go in person, and we say plainly when something is remembered rather than proven.

Carved stone detail at an ancient monastic site in Sri Lanka

How we work

  1. 01

    We go there

Nothing is written from a desk and a search engine. Every place on this site has been visited, and the details that matter — the walk in, the hours, the state of the path — come from having done it.

  2. 02

We ask the people who live there

Guides, custodians, shopkeepers, monks, the family who has tended a shrine for four generations. They know things the archaeological record does not, and they are the reason a place is understood rather than merely described.

  3. 03

    We separate history from memory

The chronicles are extraordinary documents and they are not contemporary evidence. Where an account is remembered rather than proven, it appears under an explicit heading saying so. This is the rule we break least.

  4. 04

We say when something is a problem

Where an industry harms the thing it sells — boats crowding whales, crowds eroding a site — we say so, and we say what a responsible version looks like. A guide that only ever enthuses is not a guide.

About this record

Who writes Untold Lanka?

Untold Lanka is written and edited independently, reported on location in Sri Lanka. It is not sponsored by tour operators, hotels or tourism boards, and it carries no paid placements — so a place appears here because it is worth writing about, not because someone paid for it.

How does Untold Lanka handle folklore and legend?

Separately from history, and always labelled. Where an account comes from oral tradition or a monastic chronicle rather than contemporary evidence, it appears in a marked section stating that it is remembered rather than recorded. We do not present tradition as established fact.

Can I use Untold Lanka's photographs or writing?

Not without permission. The photographs are made on location and the writing is original; both are covered by copyright. For licensing, syndication or a correction, write to us and we will reply. We correct errors openly rather than editing them away silently.

Corrections, questions, or a place we have missed.
