Gangaramaya
Colombo's magpie temple
Gangaramaya is a Buddhist temple in central Colombo, founded in the late nineteenth century beside Beira Lake. It mixes Sinhalese, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture, and its museum holds a dense collection of donated relics, manuscripts, vehicles and gifts accumulated over more than a century.

The account
Gangaramaya is the least restrained temple in the country and it is a delight for exactly that reason. Where the ancient sites are spare and monumental, this one is packed to the rafters.
The architecture alone borrows from Sinhalese, Thai, Indian and Chinese traditions, often within a single courtyard. Then there is the museum, which is less a museum than an accumulation: over a century of donations from devotees, arranged with no discernible curatorial logic. Buddha figures in every material and scale, palm-leaf manuscripts, jade, ivory, coins, spectacles, watches, a vintage Rolls-Royce. Cabinets of things people gave because giving them meant something.
It should feel like clutter and instead it feels like devotion made visible — a hundred and thirty years of individual decisions to hand something over, all still sitting there.
The temple is central to Colombo's Navam Perahera each February, when elephants, dancers and drummers process around Beira Lake. On any ordinary day it is a working city temple ten minutes from the business district, and one of the few places in Colombo where you can sit still.

Questions about Gangaramaya
What is inside the Gangaramaya museum?
- More than a century of donated objects: Buddha images in jade, ivory, crystal and bronze, palm-leaf manuscripts, coins, jewellery, spectacles, watches and a vintage Rolls-Royce. There is no formal arrangement — the collection is displayed roughly as it accumulated, which is much of its charm.
How long do you need at Gangaramaya?
- An hour is enough for the main shrine and courtyards; ninety minutes if you work through the museum properly. It sits beside Beira Lake in central Colombo, so it combines easily with the Seema Malaka pavilion on the water a few minutes' walk away.
